So even later I find indeed the error reporting from the serializer code is
more broken than I though.  Rather than me pasting patches, I suggest
you grab the fixed files from CVS:

or directly download them

You should get files rdf_serializer.c rdf_serializer.h and rdf_serializer_rdfxml.c

I've made the error messages more descriptive in what's wrong and use
the standard logging mechanism, which they never did.
